A clear nose is worth its weight in gold. Whether you suffer from a cold, hay fever, or chronic sinus infection: being able to breathe well makes life much easier. With the right nose care, you prevent annoying mucus, crusts, and pollen from blocking your nose. In this comprehensive guide, you will read what nasal rinse salt is, why you use it in a nasal rinse or neti pot, and how to safely clean your nose with the right salt solution.
What is nasal rinse salt?
The fluid in your body naturally contains about 0.9% salt. Doctors therefore recommend an isotonic salt solution to rinse your nose. In an isotonic solution, the ratio of water to salt is equal to that of your body fluid, so the rinse does not sting. The rule of thumb for an isotonic nasal rinse is 2.7 grams of salt per 300 ml of lukewarm water.
Nasal rinse salt is usually finely ground sodium chloride (table salt) without iodine. You can also use sea salt or Himalayan salt, as long as the total amount and salt content match the fluid in your body. Some brands combine sodium chloride with sodium bicarbonate to make the solution even milder; this extra ingredient prevents irritation and provides an additional cleansing effect.
Our Comformidable nasal rinse salt contains 100% pure sodium chloride without additives. With the 2.7-gram sachets, you always use the correct amount of salt for an isotonic solution. The salt does not sting, dissolves completely, and is suitable for daily use.
Why rinse your nose with salt?
Nasal rinsing is a simple way to keep your nasal passages clean. Rinsing with water alone irritates your nose because the body is used to a certain amount of salt. By mixing lukewarm water with rinse salt, the solution matches your own salt level and the rinse feels comfortable.
A salt rinse has many benefits:
-
Removes mucus, crusts, pollen, and dust. The salt solution rinses away accumulated mucus and dirt and helps remove pollen and house dust mites. This allows you to breathe more freely again.
-
Hydrates the nasal lining. An isotonic salt solution keeps your nasal lining moist and prevents drying out. This is important during colds, allergies, or dry indoor air.
-
Relieves sinus infections and hay fever. By rinsing daily, you reduce the amount of allergens in your nose and help fight sinus infections. Some variants with xylitol help break down biofilms, making it harder for bacteria to cling.
-
Supports recovery after a nose operation. Ear, nose, and throat doctors often recommend rinsing with a nasal rinse to remove crusts and bacteria.
Regular rinsing thus contributes to a healthy, open nose and better sleep.
How to use nasal rinse salt with a nasal rinse device?
A nasal rinse device or neti pot helps you let the salt solution flow through your nose with some pressure. Use it daily or as needed, for example with hay fever or a cold. Follow these simple steps:
-
Dissolve the salt. Dissolve one sachet of Comformidable rinse salt (2.7 grams) in about 300 ml of lukewarm water. By weighing the salt precisely, you get an isotonic solution and prevent irritation.
-
Fill the nasal rinse device. Pour the solution into your nasal rinse device or neti pot. Our nasal rinse device has a wide opening and two attachments. The attachment with one hole gives a stronger stream; the attachment with four holes provides a milder, gentle flow.
-
Lean forward and rinse. Lean your head forward over the sink. Insert the spout into one nostril and press the button at the bottom of the bottle. The water will flow out of the nasal rinse device and rinse through the other nostril or down the throat. You do not need to squeeze. Always keep the other nostril free. Blow your nose lightly in between and repeat in the other nostril.
-
Blow your nose afterwards. When the nasal rinse device is empty, let the remaining water drip from your nose and blow gently.
-
Clean the nasal rinse device. Clean the nasal rinse device and attachments with some water and a drop of dish soap and let them air dry. Do not use boiling water and do not put the parts in the dishwasher to prevent warping.
Use as often as needed: once a day when exposed to dust, 1–2 times a day preventively with allergies, and up to 4 times a day with severe blockage. Rinsing your nose with salt is safe; the solution does no harm and causes no pain as long as you use the correct ratio and non-iodized salt.
Who can use nasal rinse salt?
Because the solution adapts to your body, rinsing is suitable for almost everyone who wants a clean, open nose. The isotonic salt solution is gentle and does not irritate the nasal lining. People with colds, hay fever, sinus infections, or after a nose operation experience relief. Older children can learn to rinse with a neti pot, and there are even baby nasal rinses with physiological water available (always ask a doctor for advice with babies).
Xylitol and other variants
Besides pure sodium chloride, there are variants of nasal rinse salt. Some products combine sodium chloride with sodium bicarbonate; this combination provides an extra cleansing effect and makes the rinse milder. Another addition is xylitol. This natural sweetener helps break down bacterial biofilms, making it harder for bacteria to remain in the nasal lining. It is mainly intended for people with chronic sinus infections.
Comformidable consciously chooses 100% natural rinse salt without additives. You can safely use it with our nasal rinse device and optionally alternate with a product containing sodium bicarbonate or xylitol if your doctor advises so.
Use it together with the Comformidable nasal rinse device or neti pot
To clean your nose optimally, use Comformidable rinse salt in combination with our nasal rinse device or a neti pot. The rinse device provides some pressure so the water flows effortlessly through both nostrils. Of course, you can also use a ceramic neti pot for a traditional feel.
